While many cities in the US may celebrate the day and their Irish heritage, it isn&#8217;t a national holiday and most people will celebrate after work on the day, or on the surrounding weekends.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a383ea1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"a383ea1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"187\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shankardistillers.com\/india\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/ORANGE_whisky_AM-187x300-1.webp\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-6785\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d16f856 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d16f856\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Detroit held its St. Patrick\u2019s Day parade on Sunday March 12 in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/visitdetroit.com\/itinerary\/corktown-a-day-in-the-d\/\">Corktown<\/a>\u00a0section of Detroit. The city and sponsors\/organizations who sponsor the parade decided holding the parade five days before, rather than a day or two after the March 17 holiday. They might come to regret that as the revelers were dodging snowflakes.<\/p><p>Corktown is the hub of the Irish community in Southeast Michigan. The origin of the neighborhood dates back to the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century. The Great Famine of\u00a0of the 1840s resulted in extensive Irish migration to the United States and Canada. By the middle of the 19th century, they were the largest ethnic group settling in Detroit.\u00a0Many of these newcomers settled on the west side of the city; they were primarily from County Cork and the neighborhood came to be known as Corktown.<\/p><p>By the early 1850s, half of the population of the 8th Ward (which contained Corktown) were of Irish descent.\u00a0Historically, the neighborhood was roughly bounded by Third Street to the east, Grand River\u00a0to the north, 12th Street to the west, and Jefferson Avenue\/Detroit River to the south.<\/p><p>There\u2019s no getting around the fact that most St. Patrick\u2019s Day, or St. Patrick\u2019s Week, celebrations involve a certain amount of corned beef and cabbage, Irish Stew, Guinness Stout and a few drams of whiskey. There are some whiskey-based cocktails that have become standard fare for Irish pubs. Naturally, considering the holiday, many default to one of the popular Irish whiskies\u2014Jameson\u2019s or Teeling.<\/p><p>But we can certainly use Bourbon as an alternative for these tasty cocktails.<\/p><p><strong>The Irish Maid: The Perfect St. Patrick&#8217;s Day Cocktail<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>2 ounces Jameson Whiskey or Varchas Bourbon or Varchas Rye<\/li><li>3 slices of cucumber.<\/li><li>5 ounce Elderflower Liqueur.<\/li><li>75 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice.<\/li><li>75-ounce Simple Syrup with a drop of honey (the honey is optional)<\/li><li>Ice Cubes.<\/li><li>Type of Glass:<\/li><li>A standard whiskey or rocks glass.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Corktown Bourbon Sour Cocktail<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>5 oz. Varchas Bourbon or Rye<\/li><li>5 oz. Lemon juice<\/li><li>75 oz. simple syrup<\/li><li>1 egg white<\/li><li>Rocks glass<\/li><li>Shake well and strain into ice filled rocks glass<\/li><li>Garnish with lemon wedge and equal number of maraschino cherries and tart\/sour cherries.<\/li><\/ul><p>The\u00a0whiskey sour is a classic cocktail that goes back a long time! It might be that its first mention was in the 1862\u00a0 edition of Jerry Thomas Bartenders Guide. Typically this cocktail uses a bourbon or rye whiskey. Varchas has you covered either way.<\/p><p>Spirit, citrus and sugar\u2014the original big three\u2014combine to form the classic sour. It\u2019s traditionally made with whiskey\/bourbon\/rye, lemon juice, sugar and egg white, an ingredient that tames the tart flavor and creates a smoother texture. The egg white has become optional at bars today because most bartenders don\u2019t want to bother with it. But if you go to a high-end bar with professional mixologists, you\u2019ll get the eggwhite as was intended. When using egg white, you\u2019ll want to perform a \u201cdry shake\u201d and shake all the ingredients without ice before shaking again with fresh ice.<\/p><p>Like most classic cocktails, the Whiskey Sour has spawned variations. In the Mitten-state, we can create a Michigan Sour by adding some preserved sour cherries from Traverse City.<\/p><p>Next time you visit Corktown where the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/picture-gallery\/news\/local\/detroit-city\/2022\/04\/02\/corktown-development-shadow-ford-motor-companys-michigan-central-station-restoration\/7221766001\/\">Central Train Station of Detroit<\/a>\u00a0I undergoing renovation by Ford Motor Co. to turn the building and surrounding campus into a mobility research and development hub, visit The Gaelic League pub, or one of the other community Irish pubs like McShane\u2019s Irish Pub &amp; Whiskey Bar; The Old Shillelagh; Donovan\u2019s Pub; CorkTown Irish Pub or Nemo\u2019s Bar\u2026..And ask for Varchas!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back CELEBRATE ST.
